A Beach Lover: Hocus Pocus Tour

Last weekend, I dragged my husband to Salem, MA to go on a Hocus Pocus Tour.  We live a little over an hour from Salem and I have wanted to take a day trip there for the last few years.
I’ve been obsessed with the movie Hocus Pocus ever since I was a little girl and figured that the best way to celebrate this Halloween would be to stop at some of the spots where the movie was filled.  If you’ve never seen the movie Hocus Pocus, we can’t be friends anymore here is a brief synopsis:
“After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and their new friend, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches' book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal” (via).
Disclosure: Salem is packed with crowds from October 1 to October 31, so be ready…

Here’s where we stopped:
Max & Dani’s House- 4 Ocean Ave, Salem, MA, 01970
Someone actually lives in “Max & Dani’s” house and YES, I felt like a huge creep when we were taking pictures of the house, because the owners were home. The house has not changed much since the filming of the movie and they even kept the same paint colors!  When we pulled up, Steve looked at me and said “We drove to Salem for this!?”

Max had the best bedroom and if you say you weren’t jealous of those stairs leading up to that lookout tower, then you are straight up lying to your childhood self.
Allison’s House- 318 Essex Street, Salem, MA, 01970
Literally about 5 minutes down the road, you can stop by “Ropes Mansion” aka Allison’s house from the movie and check out her Yabbos, I mean check out her house.

I believe you can actually take a tour of the inside, but we opted to just take some pictures and continue on our way.
Old Town Hall- 32 Derby Square, Salem, MA, 01970
A couple of blocks from Allison’s house you can walk to the Old Town Hall, where Max and Dani’s parents partied the night away dressed as Madonna and Dracula.

The parents can be seen leaving Salem Town Hall after Winifred and the Sisters sing "I Put a Spell on You".

There are a few other spots in Salem where the movie was filmed that you can check out, but the majority of the filming was actually done in California.

Can you believe that the movie has been out since 1993!? I feel old!
Happy Halloween!

  1. That is SO fun! And was just there two weekends ago!! I should've done research to know where the homes were. I just assumed it was filed in Hollywood lol. That's one of my fave movies. I watch every year :)
